Job Summary
Acts as an active member of the patient care team to provide clinical patient care assessment, initiation, modification, and discontinuance of therapeutic respiratory care procedures to critically ill patients. Analyzes and evaluates clinical patient data to determine the appropriate therapy or interventions and makes recommendations on patient care plans to the medical staff.
Essential Functions- Initiates and/or assists with appropriate respiratory tests and procedures, as ordered, to deliver appropriate care to patients.
- Responds to respiratory emergencies and transports mechanically ventilated patients when moved from units for tests and procedures.
- Prepares appropriate care plan, and makes specific recommendations to physician for indicated therapy.
- Schedules patient treatments as necessary and provides consultation as an active member of the patient care team.
- Manages the administration of all aspects of respiratory therapy according to respiratory care policies and procedures.
- Makes regular bedside rounds and administers Respiratory Care modalities to assigned patients.
- Modifies treatment care plan according to clinical picture and response to therapy.
- Participates in education of students, physicians, staff, and patients/families.
- Clinically supervises respiratory therapy students in the patient areas.
Education:
Associate’s Degree Respiratory Therapy required or Bachelor’s Degree Respiratory Therapy preferred.
Licenses and Credentials:
Respiratory Therapist (Massachusetts) required;
Heartsaver CPR AED (AHA) preferred; NRP Neonatal.
Experience:
Respiratory Therapy 3-5 years required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of respiratory therapy practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of relevant equipment and supplies; ability to ensure proper maintenance.
- Collaboration and communication with other healthcare professionals.
- Patient and family education; ability to develop and deliver educational materials.
- Critical thinking and problem solving to assess complex situations and make informed decisions.
