Position Overview

Build upon your love of aquatics and your career growth potential by working at the West Suburban YMCA as a full‑time lifeguard at our Wells Ave location. Position Summary

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes camper safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area and is proactive in injury prevention.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately in accordance with YMCA policies.
  • Completes related reports (e.g., incident and accident reports) in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor in proper uniform.
  • Supports our DEIB statement and practices equity, diversity, belonging, and inclusion.
  • Builds positive relationships with members, participants and staff.
  • Applies safety rules, policies and guidelines consistently for the waterfront and aquatic area.
  • Maintains accurate records required by the YMCA and the state Health Department code.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available.
  • Conducts regular chemical checks and circulations of pools as needed.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival and during shifts.
  • Cleans pool deck area when not guarding, as required.
  • Attends all staff meetings and in‑service training.
  • Willingness to accept responsibilities and duties outside of the assigned scope.
Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 16 years old.
  • Certifications:

    CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Good role model, high integrity and professionalism, and adaptable.
  • Demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Commitment to supporting anti‑racist work and learning about the organization’s initiatives.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people.
  • Punctual and reliable.
Physical Demands
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Meet strength and lifting requirements.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
