Cambridge Regional College is seeking a motivated and supportive Learning Support Mentor. This rewarding role will primarily support students within our Construction and Motor Vehicle departments, helping learners with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities to access their education and achieve their full potential. Experience, knowledge, or a genuine interest in Construction and/or Motor Vehicle environments would be highly beneficial.

The successful candidate will work directly with students in a variety of settings, including practical workshops, specialist training areas, classrooms, and other learning environments across the college. Our team provides high‑quality support to students with a diverse range of needs, including D/deaf students, those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), physical access needs, learning disabilities, visual impairments, and language impairments.

The primary purpose of this role is to:
Support students with learning difficulties and disabilities to become empowered, enabling them to fully access the curriculum and successfully achieve their programme of study through the development of greater independence. Work collaboratively with subject lecturing staff and assessors under the direction of the Learning Support Manager, or their delegate. Provide high‑quality support within a wide variety of learning environments, including construction workshops, motor vehicle workshops, classrooms, practical sessions, and off‑site learning activities where required.

Support students to access their curriculum through a range of strategies, including:

  • Reading and explaining learning materials.
  • Note‑taking and recording key information.
  • Word processing and use of IT systems.
  • Supporting the use of assistive and enabling technologies.
  • Clarifying and defining language, terminology, and instructions.
  • Developing students' organisational, study, and metacognitive skills.

Encourage students to develop confidence, resilience, self‑advocacy, and independence in their learning. Support students in safely accessing practical workshop activities and vocational learning opportunities. Maintain accurate records and contribute to the review of support strategies and student progress. Work positively and inclusively with students, staff, parents/carers, and external professionals where appropriate.

Has experience supporting young people or adults in an educational, training, care, or support setting. Has an understanding of, or willingness to learn about, a range of learning difficulties and disabilities. Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Is patient, flexible, and able to build positive professional relationships with students and staff. Can work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Has good organisational and IT skills. Has experience or a strong interest in Construction and/or Motor Vehicle subjects and is comfortable working within workshop environments as well as traditional classrooms.
