VICE PRINCIPAL – Job Description
The Vice Principal will deputise for the Principal when necessary and participate actively in all aspects of school life. In addition to a full-time teaching commitment and membership of the School Leadership Team, the Vice Principal’s duties include:
- Leading learning through high standards of teaching and learning.
- Assisting the Principal in all areas of leading learning and teaching, school administration, management and organisation.
- Assisting the Principal in leading School Development Planning, School Evaluation Self-Evaluations and Staff Development (INSET).
- Curriculum co-ordination including overseeing the development and delivery of the curriculum across the Key Stages.
- Assisting the Principal in co-ordinating curriculum development, including planning, benchmarking, target setting, PRSD, monitoring the quality of provision within the school.
- Acting as assessment coordinator for the school.
- Assisting the Principal with promotion of positive behaviour and assertive discipline.
- Chairing the Safeguarding Team and promoting the best opportunities for children, with a particular interest in Gifted/Talented pupils.
- Acting as line manager for classroom assistants.
- Assisting with financial administration including budget planning, allocations, monitoring spend and reconciliations.
- Responsibility for timetables and rotas.
- Maintaining, developing and promoting links with parents, including membership of the school PTFA committee.
- Assisting with the organisation of major school events and with extra-curricular activities.
- Providing lunch-time cover as required and undertaking other duties as the Principal may require.

The conditions of service for this post are in accordance with the Regulations of the Department of Education for Northern Ireland. This job description may be amended after discussion with the Principal and is intended to provide guidance within which the post-holder works. The post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and pay due regard to equality legislation.

The criteria will be applied at shortlisting as follows. Applicants must at the closing date for applications:
- Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
Preference May Be Given To Those Applicants Who
- Have completed an additional postgraduate (or equivalent or higher) qualification in Education.
Experience
The criteria that will be applied at shortlisting include the following (experience must be accrued by the closing date for receipt of applications):
- Have a minimum of 10 years post-qualification teaching experience in post-primary education, and/or equivalent experience in an affiliated educational body, within the last 15 years.
- Currently hold or have held for a minimum of 4 years within the last 9 years a post of Principal or Vice-Principal; and/or a post of Senior Teacher within the leadership and management of a large post-primary school.
- Evidence of how leadership has led to sustained whole-school improvement.
- Evidence of involvement in leading whole-staff development in schools.
- Evidence of involvement in whole-school strategic planning.
Additional Preferences
- May be given to applicants with at least 5 years in a role with responsibility for leading/co-ordinating SEN at a strategic level (e.g., SENCo).
- Holding a Certificate of Competence in Psychometric Testing, Assessment and Access Arrangements, or equivalent.
- Experience in setting up and leading Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 Specialist Provisions for pupils with Social and Communication needs.
- Evidence of commitment to Integrated Education.

- Knowledge of The Northern Ireland Post Primary Curriculum and current policies.
- Understanding of current educational developments and ability to evaluate and respond to new challenges and manage change.
