Principal Mechanical Engineer (Water / Wastewater)

Locations (office base options): Bristol, Exeter, Cardiff, Swansea, Birmingham, Derby, Epsom, Peterborough, Cambridge, Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Belfast.

Working pattern: Hybrid - typically 3 days per week office/site-based.

Type: Permanent full-time.

The Opportunity

A leading engineering and design consultancy is looking to appoint a Principal Mechanical Engineer to strengthen its Water and Environmental delivery capability. You'll take a key role in delivering complex, multi-disciplinary programmes across water and wastewater infrastructure; helping clients tackle resilience, sustainability and performance challenges across critical UK assets.

What you'll be doing
  • Leading and coordinating mechanical design delivery on complex projects (e.g., pumping stations, treatment works, process/mechanical packages).
  • Producing and checking calculations, specifications, reports, scopes of work and drawings.
  • Providing technical direction to ensure compliance with UK standards, project requirements and industry best practice.
  • Working with project management to deliver to programme, budget and quality targets.
  • Supporting bids/proposals with strong technical input.
  • Mentoring engineers and strengthening local capability.
  • Maintaining QA discipline, checking your own work and reviewing others'.
What we're looking for
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Chartered or Incorporated (or clearly working towards).
  • Demonstrable experience leading mechanical design in a consultancy / multi-discipline environment.
  • Equipment integration experience (pumps, blowers, screens, chemical dosing, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of CDM and DSEAR and relevant UK standards.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work autonomously.
  • Experience in the Water industry is essential.
