Full Description

The principal role is to lead the Society to achieve its aims and objectives.

Support the promotion, maintenance, preservation, improvement, reconstruction and restoration of the canal to benefit local communities.

Promote good practice in the creating a positive profile for the Society.

Build and maintain strong relationships with Society members, its committee, landowners (mainly Canal & River Trust), other partners and the local community.

Tasks
  • Represent and be the face of MBBCS, meet external organisations either online or in person, for example
    • Inland Waterways Association (IWA), Canal & River Trust (C&RT)
    • M.B.B. Canal Restoration Partnership
    • Landowners (C&RT, United Utilities, Watson Homes, Bolton, Bury and Salford Councils)
    • Local Community Groups and their representatives, councillors, MPs
    • Supporters, funders and Council Officers
    [variable time requirements but usually this is shared with other Trustees]
  • Request one week before meetings that reports are circulated to all Council members
  • Chair quarterly Council meetings
  • Fix date of next meeting
  • Request any alterations to the minutes be sent to the Secretary within 2 weeks
  • Hold Annual General Meeting with support of the Company Secretary
  • Revise Annual Report and sign the annual accounts [Both take a few minutes]
  • Skills
    • Demonstrate leadership
    • Chairing meetings (keep it on track, keep it moving)
    • Good communication – written, oral and inter-personal, particularly in political environments and at strategic meetings
    • Strategic awareness and organisational development
    Knowledge
    • Become familiar with the canal and its heritage
    • Understand the strengths and opportunities for the canal and its weaknesses and threats to be managed
    • Understand how to support and build an organisation through periods of change, growth and evolution
