Ship Captain

Responsibilities

• Leadership:
  Direct crew, motivate and manage personnel.
• Navigation:
  Plan routes, operate navigation systems, and ensure safe passage.
• Regulatory Compliance:
  Adhere to maritime regulations, safety procedures, and reporting requirements.
• Operational Management:
  Oversee ship operations, maintenance schedules, and cargo handling.
• Decision Making:
  Rapidly assess situations, make critical decisions, and mitigate risks.

• Formal maritime education, typically a Master of Ship Captain (CoC) credential.
• Extensive sea service experience, usually 10‑12 years progression.
• Regulated authority:
  Master of the vessel, certification required.
• Licensed:
  Master’s Certificate of Competency (CoC) and Master’s Certificate of Authority (CoA).

• Leadership:
  Team management, conflict resolution.
• Navigation:
  Chart reading, GPS, radar, ECDIS usage.
• Regulatory:
  Knowledge of IMCA, STC, SOLAS, MARPOL.
• Communication:
  Clear safety briefings, crew coordination.
• Decision Making:
  Situational awareness, risk assessment.

Typical progression: 0‑6 months explore maritime, 6‑12 months build fundamentals, 1‑2 years demonstrate evidence, 3‑5 years secure first Master role.
