REPORT TO: CAC Director

The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) is a child-friendly and culturally appropriate center for the investigation of child sexual abuse. The CAC Educator/Forensic Interviewer will work with children and people of all ages that have experienced physical or sexual abuse, witnessed or experienced domestic violence, severe or medical neglect, and/or have been exposed to drugs.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Under the supervision of the CAC Director, collaborate the other agencies currently operating Child Advocacy Centers to research current trends in CAC operations.
  • Educate parents, children, community members, clients, families, in-house staff at the CAC, and those who play the role of adults to protect children.
  • Attend Alaska Child First Forensic Interviewer training. Conduct forensic interviews at the CAC as needed. Provide information from the interviews to multi-disciplinary team members. Enter information from the interview into NCATrak.
  • Maintain contact with community professionals, families and clients in the Bering Strait Region on a regular basis to ensure the Child Abuse prevention awareness needs are met.
  • Maintain and track the number of participants for all educational programs.
  • Develop, create and implement a public awareness campaign to educate families in our region about the CAC services available, and prevention of child abuse. Create educational materials and distribute to the public as needed. Assist to prepare newsletters twice a year.
  • Submit Awareness ads in collaboration with local radio stations and the Nome Nugget on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate April's Child Abuse Awareness campaign including activities and pamphlets/flyers for Nome and surrounding communities.
  • Offer recommendations to improve the CAC media to include resource information, and other helpful information for victims of child physical/sexual abuse. Create an FAQ section. Travel throughout the region to provide prevention/education presentations to the Bering Straits School District and to develop child abuse resource centers.
  • Other duties as assigned by the CAC Director.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • AA degree in Human Services field or two years of responsible work experience in comparable field. Willingness to attend professional development courses required for the position.
  • Ability to work with children and people of all ages that have experienced abuse.
  • Ability to write documents for distribution such as brochures, newsletters, newspaper articles, etc.
  • Knowledge of Internet, Microsoft Office software, computer data systems.
  • Must be a self-starter and possess strong organizational and communication skills.
  • May be required to occasionally assist in case referrals after 5:00pm or on weekends.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of people from various backgrounds and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Must be willing to travel in a small commuter aircraft to conduct services within the Bering Strait region.
  • This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act AS .05.390, 7 AAC , and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 USC
  • (ICPA). A background check clearance is required, including fingerprints, and the employee's name will be submitted to the Background Check Unit of the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and entered into their central registry. Barrier Crimes Act and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
