The role supports Earth Observation and Science projects, with a focus on microwave remote sensing and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Key areas include wave interaction and propagation, simulation, data processing, retrieval algorithms, and data science. The position also contributes to machine learning applications (particularly deep learning), supports research and development activities, and maintains the Section’s computational infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Apply expertise in wave propagation for space communications, navigation, and remote sensing applications.
Analyse wave interaction across active, passive, and hybrid remote sensing systems for ocean, land, atmosphere, and planetary studies.
Develop and improve payload data processing, data products, and data science methodologies.
Contribute to simulation tools and performance evaluation frameworks supporting end-to-end mission performance.
Provide technical expertise to ESA projects and studies across all lifecycle phases:
Perform and document technical analyses
Support implementation of industrial activities
Contribute to technical reviews and project deliverables
Deliver hands‑on support for:
Simulation and modelling
Data collection and analysis (in coordination with laboratory services where required)
Design, develop, validate, and operate wave interaction tools and databases
Support the Section’s computational infrastructure.
Contribute to the lifecycle of internal software tools:
Development
Testing and validation
Deployment and maintenance
Support and contribute to R&D activities in wave interaction and related domains:
Provide input to technology roadmaps and technical requirements
Monitor scientific and technological trends and maintain state‑of‑the‑art expertise
Contribute to technical documentation, reviews, and meetings
Collaborate with industry and academia:
Review external deliverables and provide feedback
Support ESA technical officers in meetings and technical coordination
Organise and report on ad‑hoc technical discussions when required
Qualifications
MSc or PhD in physics, engineering or computer science combined with at least 4 years of relevant experience.
Understanding of the physics of microwave remote sensing of the environment (natural and man‑made).
Experience with Synthetic Aperture Radar, and with the related data processing functions.
Several years of experience with advanced data analysis and data science techniques and with machine learning, with a focus on deep learning.
Working experience with scientific software development, testing, maintenance and operations.
