Job SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Grading Foreman to lead grading crews on highway and roadway construction projects. This position is responsible for coordinating daily field operations, supervising crews, maintaining production and quality standards, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project plans and specifications.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Lead and supervise grading crews performing roadway and highway construction activities.
- Coordinate daily work activities with the Superintendent, equipment operators, laborers, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Complete assigned work according to project plans, specifications, schedules, and production goals.
- Read and interpret plans, blueprints, grades, elevations, and construction stakes.
- Direct grading operations, including rough grading, fine/finish grading, subgrade preparation, slopes, and roadway construction
. - Inspect completed work to ensure proper grade, elevation, quality, and compliance with project specifications.
- Identify and resolve field issues that may affect production, quality, or schedule.
- Assign daily tasks and provide clear direction to crew members.
- Monitor crew productivity and ensure daily and weekly production goals are met.
- Ensure equipment operators and laborers receive proper instruction and training before performing assigned work independently.
- Coordinate and monitor subcontractor activities on assigned job sites.
- Maintain accurate crew timecards and daily field documentation.
- Assist with or conduct jobsite safety meetings as required.
- Support traffic control and erosion-control requirements on assigned projects.
- Monitor materials, tools, and supplies to ensure crews have what is needed to maintain production.
- Maintain positive and professional working relationships with employees, subcontractors, customers, inspectors, and project stakeholders.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Project Management team.
- Strong knowledge of roadway grading operations and construction staking.
- Ability to read and understand construction plans, blueprints, elevations, grades, and specifications.
- Experience with rough grading, finish grading, subgrade preparation, and roadway construction.
- Knowledge of traffic control, erosion control, and jobsite safety requirements.
- Ability to effectively lead, train, and manage field crews.
- Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, equipment, and production requirements.
- Ability to operate grading equipment when needed; finish grading experience preferred.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience with HCSS or similar construction management software is a plus.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 5+ years of relevant heavy civil construction experience
, preferably involving roadway/highway grading. - Previous experience as a Grading Foreman, Grade Foreman, Leadman, field leadership position preferred.
- Demonstrated experience supervising grading crews, equipment operators, and laborers.
- DOT roadway infrastructure project experience preferred.
- Ability to provide clear direction and effectively communicate expectations to field crews.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with Superintendents, Project Managers, subcontractors, inspectors, and other project personnel.
- Ability to read and understand project instructions, plans, specifications, correspondence, and safety requirements.
- Ability to document field activities and communicate project concerns in a timely manner.
