Position: Swim Instructor I

The YMCA serves more than 3,000 children ages 6 weeks through Pre‑K with high‑quality literacy and STEAM‑infused learning; provides 58,000 youth and teens with access to sports, aquatics, day and resident camps, teen leadership programs, and employment opportunities; and offers over 200,000 members programs, services and facilities for connection and wellness. In this role, you will help maintain a supportive, positive atmosphere and deliver engaging swim instruction to our members and participants.

and Scope

The Swim Instructor maintains a positive environment that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes.

Minimum Requirements
  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
  • Intro to the Y’s Cause and Culture, Living our Cause & I Hear You. Service with Care e‑learning completed within the first 30 days.
Responsibilities
  • Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and support members and program participants in achieving their goals.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; help participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourage parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and, as appropriate, refer program participants and families to other programs.
  • Maintain records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment.
  • Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
  • Complete other YMCA duties as assigned.
