Under the direct supervision of the Wellness Director, the Group Exercise Instructor-Level II is responsible for conducting YMCA group exercise classes, selecting appropriate music, and managing class set-up and takedown. The instructor educates class members about THE COACH APPROACH and fitness-related issues. This position aligns with the YMCA of Metro Atlanta policies, mission, and values and supports initiatives to strengthen the foundations of community through healthy living.
Responsibilities
- Carry out daily program tasks related directly to the position's scope and responsibilities.
- Stay updated on current issues regarding group fitness/wellness programs.
- Promote, monitor, evaluate, and ensure that group exercise classes run smoothly with a high level of service to participants.
- Maintain branch and association certifications in CPR/AED and any other required certifications/trainings.
- Maintain wellness certifications (land or water) and meet continuing education requirements; obtain and maintain specialty certifications as applicable.
- Obtain and maintain access to Y-Link and Metro Atlanta YMCA Workday; upload certifications and CE credits as required.
- Possess current CPR/AED certification and renew it every two years.
- Pass group exercise auditions for the formats being taught.
- Be knowledgeable about fitness-related topics and THE COACH APPROACH.
- Complete THE COACH APPROACH Orientation within 30 days of hire.
- Demonstrate strong human-relations, teamwork, customer-service, and time-management skills.
- Adhere to YMCA risk and safety guidelines, branch emergency procedures, and appropriate contraindications and safety practices.
- Log class attendance in Group Ex PRO and check for updates and sub opportunities regularly; secure substitutions when needed.
- Support as needed in all aspects of the YMCA and its community; participate in wellness cabinet activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High school or GED required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Experience teaching group exercise classes (one year preferred).
- Current national group exercise certification from ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or NETA (land instructors); current national water group exercise certification via AEA (water instructors).
- Obtain YMCA/ACE online Group Exercise Instructor Certification and relevant courses within 60 days of hire; additional certifications (e.g., Strength and Conditioning) if teaching certain formats.
- Pass pre-employment background and drug screening; legal eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship.
- Ability to access and utilize Y-Link and Workday systems; maintain certifications through these platforms.
- Ability to pass criminal background and drug-screening checks and adhere to all policy requirements.
