Job SummaryThe Special Education Instructional Assistant will be employed to support and assist in the delivery of core curriculum using a unique knowledge or skill base to support whole class instruction and/or to deliver specialized instruction individually or to a small group of identified students with special needs.
Responsibilities- Assist special education students under the supervision of the Special Education teachers.
- Adapt/modify lessons and classroom activities in accordance with the student's current IEP.
- Provide communication between resource and regular classroom teachers.
- Support the teacher’s instruction by assisting in planning, modifying and implementing curriculum, instruction and assessment according to the specific needs of the student.
- Assist the teacher in creating and maintaining an instructional environment that is conducive to learning.
- Encourage appropriate student behaviors by assisting with discipline, motivation and behavior management.
- Follow behavior management procedures and prescribed consequences for student behavior.
- Work with individual students or small groups on prescribed educational programs.
- Attend specials with students as determined by TEAM or specialist teacher.
- Document data as specified and required.
- Respond to physical needs of student(s) including positioning, lifting, and self‑help skills.
- Assist individual students with personal care such as toileting issues and feeding or teaching of utensil use.
- Follow the Norfolk Public Schools Restraint Policy and Crisis Intervention Policy.
- Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in the school setting.
- Work collaboratively and contribute to a positive school climate.
- Assist in maintaining classroom areas as appropriate.
- Complete assigned duties such as bus duty, lunch and/or recess duty if required.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- College level training in education and/or childcare highly desirable.
