Duties, Responsibilities & Other
  • Upon successful demonstration of required skills and aptitude, candidates will be eligible for more senior positions.
  • Work will be nearby on and around active highways, roadways, and water/land bridge construction. Nighttime shifts can be expected.
  • Inspects and monitors contractual fieldwork, including excavations, drainage facilities, concrete placement, steel and precast member erections, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, and structures of moderate complexity.
  • Verifies construction of roadway and highway work to be in compliance with drawings, VDOT specifications and standards, special provisions and contract documents.
  • Advises contractors of deficiencies, issues, failing tests, noncompliance and provides reference documents for conclusions.
  • Takes field measurements of materials placed and records production and test results.
  • Performs materials testing such as nuclear gauge soil and aggregate density and performs dense aggregate roller pattern control strips.
  • Reviews placement of and performs materials tests on concrete deliveries in accordance with VDOT and ACI standards. Makes cylinders for delivery to the labs.
  • Reviews and inspects asphalt and concrete roadways and bridge decks.
  • Reviews and inspects reinforcing steel and forms prior to concrete placement on more complex and non-routine structures and signs pour cards.
  • Reviews lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment.
  • Oversees and enforces the installation of erosion/siltation controls and highways work zones and traffic control devices.
  • Prepares daily diaries, inspection checklists and materials testing forms.
  • Receives materials delivery tickets for compliance and submission to contractor.
  • Takes assignments and direction from Quality Control Lead Management and Senior Inspectors.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the quality of construction inspection and testing.
  • Track deficiencies and nonconformance and their corrective actions; document in Daily Report.
  • Attend work activity prep meetings and actively participate in kick-off meetings for work activities.
Qualifications Education and/or

Skills Required:
  • 0-2 years of experience
  • High school/GED
  • Ability to understand construction plans, specifications, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate basic math skills, including geometry and trigonometry.
  • Possess the ability to read, write, and communicate fluently.
  • Work effectively as a team member and complete daily reports by hand and computer.
Education and/or Work Experience Preferred

Experience working in a construction related field.

Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations Required
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to pass and maintain required certifications.
