Position: Lecturer Costume Designer and Shop Manager (Non-Tenured F0073A)

Job Summary

The Communication and Theatre Arts Department at Old Dominion University invites applicants for a Lecturer of Costume Designer and Shop Manager (Non‑Tenured F0073A) to begin in Fall 2026. This is an annual, 10‑month non‑tenured appointment. The selected candidate will teach one course per semester—such as Stage Makeup, Costume Design, Costume Crafts, or a related course aligned with the candidate’s area of expertise—serve as lead Costume Studio Manager, design one theatre and one dance production per semester, and collaborate with directors, choreographers, and student performers.

Responsibilities

• Teach one course per semester—Stage Makeup, Costume Design, Costume Crafts, or related course.
• Lead Costume Studio Manager: oversee daily operations of the costume studio, supervise part‑time assistant studio manager and student workers.
• Design one theatre production and one dance production per semester in collaboration with directors, choreographers, and student performers.
• Attend rehearsals and production meetings (including evenings and weekends) to ensure costumes meet artistic and logistical needs.
• Organize and maintain theatre and dance costume inventories, and participate in program meetings and occasional service in support of both the theatre and dance program.

Qualifications Required

• Master’s degree in Fine Arts in Costume Design, Costume Technology, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience designing costumes for both traditional theatre and concert dance, as well as for devised or collaborative performance projects.
• Proven ability to work effectively in collaborative and interdisciplinary environments.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.

Preferred

• Professional or university experience in Costume Design and Technology.
• Prior university‑level teaching experience.
• Strong background in costume and craft technology.
• Experience organizing and maintaining costume inventories.
• Familiarity with both devised and traditional dance and theatre performance processes.
• Interest in working across disciplines and supporting student learning in a collaborative, inclusive environment.
