Design Technician
Job Summary
Responsible for plan designs and construction documents. Develops and coordinates renovations, expansions or construction for NEX facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities- Designs and develops a wide range and variety of functional space and equipment layouts and specifications involving all aspects of operational factors, space allocations, interior and exterior design, master planning, construction budgeting, and equipment selection, utility requirements including plumbing, HVAC, electrical and refrigeration.
- Reviews Architectural and Engineering (A/E) plans and specifications, comments and makes recommendations on layout, interior design, equipment and furniture selection, utility requirements and placements.
- Determines layout requirements, functional and operational needs, space allocations and inter‑relationship of spaces, equipment and fixture design, customer traffic flow, patron needs and comfort. Coordinates with NEXCOM codes and Navy Exchanges on developing and implementing merchandise fixture designs and standards, merchandise department space allocations, new shop concepts, system operational requirements and construction policy.
- Conducts advisory visits to Navy Exchanges either individually or as team leader to develop functional equipment layouts and interior design for renovation, expansion and new and renovated facilities.
- Determines equipment requirements, sites them in layouts, estimates costs for use by A/E designers, contractors and preparation of requisitions for bid.
- Develops and is responsible for the maintenance of a library on equipment furnishings, materials and manufacturers of products relating to specialty areas.
- May evaluate and make recommendations concerning proposals for expansion or renovation for feasibility, cost and layout efficiency and functional requirements.
- Keeps abreast of latest AutoCAD and related computer assisted design systems pertaining to the retail and construction industry.
- Works under general supervision of a designated supervisor, receives periodic reports on work progress, and accepts spot‑check reviews for technical compliance with standards and guidelines applicable to the project for selection of equipment and best possible arrangement for functional and aesthetic needs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Three years of experience that provided knowledge helpful in developing skills in making measurements using required instruments, computing reading architectural engineering drawings or specifications, or other architectural technician work.
Substitution of Education for Experience1 year of related academic study above the high school level may be substituted for each year of general experience. For 1 year specialized experience, 1 year of academic study may be substituted for each six months of specialized experience. Education substituted for experience should include 9 semester hours per year in courses such as engineering architecture, industrial technology, construction drafting, or other related areas.

One year of responsible experience in nonprofessional work which provided knowledge of some of the pertinent principles, methods, and techniques in architecture relating to construction, renovation, and expansion projects.
