Job Summary

The Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences (OES) at Old Dominion University invites applications for a tenure‑track faculty position in sea level rise (SLR) with a focus on physical contributions to sea level. The position is part of ODU’s Centennial Cluster Hire initiative and will start in Fall 2026 as a 10‑month appointment.

Responsibilities

This faculty member will partner with cluster hire faculty across subdisciplines (physical oceanography, coastal geology, geological oceanography, geospatial analysis, environmental sciences, remote sensing) to develop transdisciplinary research, education, and outreach programs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research to develop accurate assessments of SLR by focusing on physical contributions to sea level, including studies on ice sheet dynamics, thermal expansion, sea‑water storage, atmosphere‑ocean models, and sea‑level trajectories.
  • Integrating observations (GNSS, InSAR, satellite altimetry, tide‑gauge data) with numerical models to project physical contributions to sea‑level change.
  • Teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in physical oceanography and data analysis.
  • Mentoring graduate students and contributing to department teaching and outreach.
  • Developing and securing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research collaborations.
  • Qualifications
    • Ph.D. in geology, oceanography, environmental science, or a related science discipline completed by the position start date.
    • Demonstrated research and publication record on drivers of sea‑level rise.
    • Experience using GNSS, InSAR, satellite altimetry, tide gauge data, or other observational data with climate or numerical models.
    • Ability to develop and teach both graduate and undergraduate courses in physical oceanography and data analysis.
    • Experience as a mentor or supervisor for graduate students.
    • Post‑doctoral experience strongly preferred.
    • Clear plan for developing graduate and undergraduate courses in OES.
    • Track record of developing funded interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research collaborations.
