The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) within the Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in mechanical and aerospace engineering, starting Fall 2026. We seek candidates with expertise in high‑speed flow, aerothermodynamics modeling, gas–surface thermochemical interactions, propulsion, and plasma physics related to hypersonic flight.
We also welcome applicants with relevant aerospace engineering backgrounds that will complement and enhance our department's existing strengths.
Ideal candidates will be capable of teaching in these specialized areas and more, while actively contributing to our research and service missions. They should establish and maintain an externally funded research program, provide quality instruction at both undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor students in research, and participate in departmental, college, university, and professional activities.
Responsibilities- Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical and aerospace engineering.
- Develop and sustain sponsored research programs.
- Mentor students in research and support their academic development.
- Participate in departmental, college, university, and professional activities.
- Contribute to the research and service missions of the department.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in research and scholarly publications.
- Experience conducting sponsored research.
- Experience in teaching.
- Plans for developing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research collaborations to advance the aerospace engineering program in the department.
