Hornblower is seeking Second Assistant Engineers for our Seaward Services TSVRON operation in Norfolk, VA. This role supports the safe and efficient operation of all engineering systems aboard Training Support Vessels and assists the Chief Engineer and senior engineering staff in maintenance, repair, and monitoring of propulsion and auxiliary machinery. The 2AE stands engine room watches and participates in both underway and in-port engineering duties as assigned.
Salary: $46.15 / hour
About YouThis person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody Hornblower's RESPECT Service System.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Serve as a member of the Engineering Department, supporting engineering operations and shipboard machinery management.
- Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, and troubleshooting on propulsion systems, auxiliary equipment, power generation systems, and related engineering equipment as directed by the Chief Engineer.
- Stand assigned engine room watches (Duty Engineer) in accordance with operational and watch standing requirements.
- Respond as the on-call Duty Engineer when the vessel is in homeport, following the established rotational watch bill.
- Maintain engineering logs, maintenance records, and equipment reports as required.
- Follow all safety, environmental, and regulatory procedures associated with engineering operations.
- Assist senior engineering officers with training and support of junior engineering personnel when required.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support vessel engineering readiness and safe operation.
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with STCW endorsements meeting the standard for:
Chief Engineer/Second Engineer Officer of 3,000 kW (4,000 HP) or More. - Valid USCG Medical Certificate meeting engineering service standards.
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Must possess or be eligible for a United States Passport.
- Must meet physical and medical requirements for shipboard engineering duties, including the ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and handle equipment and tools.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to support maintenance and troubleshooting of marine machinery.
- Ability to stand rotating watches and respond to engineering emergencies as required.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills to support coordinated engineering operations.
- Must meet all company and contractual requirements.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
