Colonna's Shipyard – Norfolk, VA

Purpose

Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1st Class Structural Welder to support 2nd shift operations (3:30 PM – 12:00 AM) in our shipyard in Norfolk, VA.

Responsibilities
  • Weld metal components of products as specified by layout, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, welding producers, or oral instructions using electric arc‑welding equipment.
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring no loose or thin scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter.
  • Complete welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Operate manual or semi‑automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux‑cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
  • Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal.
  • Clean or degrease weld joint or workpiece using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment and select proper electrodes according to the metals to be joined or as instructed.
  • Preform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes.
  • Burning, washing, edge prepping using hand and automated equipment.
  • Flux‑cored inner shield and dual shield welding along with oxy‑acetylene torching, air‑arc, weld‑wire gas, stick and pipe flange.
  • Construct or repair metal products by joining parts manually (using a variety of welding methods including electric arc, MIG and TIG welding or oxy‑acetylene welding) or by machine.
  • Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Persons reports and determine if job sites, particularly those involving combustible material, are safe for personnel and hot work.
  • Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel‑toe boots/shoes, and respirator when necessary).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • At least seven (7) years’ experience as a welder.
  • Ability to perform multi‑pass, all‑position fillet and butt welds using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques (oxygen‑acetylene, electric arc, and TIG), tools and equipment.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and instruments associated with the trade.
  • Team‑orientation and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates.
  • Ability to enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces.
  • Steady, reliable worker with regular attendance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous technical training.
  • DBIDS eligibility preferred.
Security
  • Position requires U.S. Citizenship.
Travel Requirements
  • Minimal travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 20 lbs).
  • Physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships, including work on and climbing ladders, operating in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Perform other duties involving high heat, humidity, noise, dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise from machinery and equipment.
  • Operate trucks, forklifts, and man‑lifts.
  • May be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands or fingers, handle or feel, speak, and hear; sometimes reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist, and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions; may work in areas with limited ventilation.
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Wear protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
