Location

Purpose

Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1st Class Pipe Welder to support 2nd shift operations in our shipyard in Norfolk, VA.

Key Responsibilities
  • Weld together metal components of products as specified by layout, blueprints, diagrams, or welding procedures.
  • Select the best method to prepare all material surfaces for welding, ensuring removal of scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other contaminants, and clean, degrease, or desmut weld joints.
  • Complete welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions for at least three base materials, using a wide variety of processes.
  • Fabricate brackets, panels, complex beams, and structural shapes.
  • Plumb transverse bulkheads and panels to fabricate enclosures and complex weldments.
  • Operate and set up hydraulic jacks, pumps, chain falls, and other lifting or support equipment.
  • Repair base-metal products by adding minimal weld metal or heat and grinding/smoothing to meet specifications.
  • Perform air-arc back gouging, oxy-acetylene torching (e.g., brazing, cutting, pre-heating), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), pipe welding, and pipe flange and socket welding.
  • Mark or tag material with proper job numbers, piece marks, and other identifying marks, and always mark completed welds with welder number.
  • Perform single-pass 5/16-inch minimum fillet welds in all positions using FCAW on carbon steel and at least ¼-inch single-pass fillets on two other materials.
  • Supervise welding setups in accordance with applicable WPS, ensuring all welding equipment is correctly configured.
  • Clean torches, lay out cables, and perform routine maintenance on all equipment.
  • Recommend WPS and WPS upgrades requiring production, documentation, and testing of PQRs and WPQs.
  • Trains less-experienced welders, enforces good workmanship, and ensures safe welding practices.
  • Inspect welds, grinding, and joint preparation for NDT processes, observing QA/NDT hold points.
  • Develop dimensional calculations and bracing/weld sequencing steps to maintain tolerances and minimize distortions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • At least seven (7) years of pipe welding experience.
  • Experience working in physically demanding environments.
  • At least three (3) years of experience using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) or GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding).
Desired Qualifications
  • Prefer certifications in SMAW and GTAW welding processes.
  • Prefer ability to fuse inserts and weld carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper-nickel pipe using SMAW and GTAW.
Security Requirements
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to government installations (DBIDs).
Travel Requirements
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements
  • Must lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 20 lb).
  • Must be physically agile to work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces, including entry and movement through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform duties in high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions, working aloft or over vessel sides.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Required to operate trucks, forklifts, and man‑lifts.
  • May stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist, and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions, with limited ventilation.
  • Frequent use of respirators.
  • Wear protective clothing, face shields, or goggles when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
