Overview

The Monarch Transit Driver is responsible for driving the campus shuttles on all regularly scheduled routes, special event routes, and supplementing the Safe Ride driving staff. The drivers will provide safe and hospitable transport for University community members and guests. Drivers will communicate department and University information as the first point of contact representing the office of Transportation and Parking Services for passengers on board Monarch Transit vehicles.

Drivers will assist the Daytime and Evening Transportation Supervisors in filling driver and route schedules, as well as assist in the driving for special event services provided with the use of Monarch Transit vehicles. Drivers will be responsive to changes and alterations in scheduled and unexpected service operations.

Responsibilities
  • Drive campus shuttles on regularly scheduled routes and special event routes.
  • Supplement Safe Ride driving staff as needed.
  • Provide safe, hospitable transport for University community members and guests.
  • Communicate department and University information to passengers as the first point of contact.
  • Assist supervisors in filling driver and route schedules and in driving for special events.
  • Respond to changes and alterations in scheduled and unexpected service operations.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Basic knowledge of the Commonwealth of Virginia motor vehicle laws.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions and regulations related to multi-passenger motor vehicle operation.
  • Knowledge of procedures for operating and inspecting motor vehicles prior to use.
  • Some knowledge of MS Office or related software.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong listening, comprehension, and customer service abilities.
  • Navigational skills to read a map and locate addresses within designated service area.
  • Ability to learn building names, locations, and addresses within the Safe Ride service area.
  • Ability to promote a positive image of the University and resolve customer service issues.
  • Ability to use automated dispatch software and operate a multi-line telephone, tablet computer, 2-way radio, and/or mobile devices.
  • Ability to interpret and follow established parking regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to complete routine forms and reports accurately and legibly.
  • Ability to respond quickly with sound judgment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to be punctual and complete work assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to sit in a vehicle for extended periods.
Licenses, Certifications
  • Must possess a Valid Virginia Class C Commercial Driver's License with a P endorsement (Passenger) or other U.S. state CDL accepted in Virginia, with an insurable driving record.
Education and Experience
  • Education or training:
    None listed.
  • Experience:

    Some experience in passenger transportation, vehicle maintenance, and/or fleet management/operations or related field; some experience in a customer service-related position.
Additional Considerations
  • Considerable experience driving a twenty passenger or larger Body on Chassis (BOC) or similar vehicle preferred.
  • Experience in passenger transportation, vehicle maintenance, and/or fleet management/operations or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of Old Dominion University campus facilities and surrounding neighborhood streets.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must possess and maintain a Virginia Class C CDL with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Must have and maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Must be available to work daytime and afternoon shifts, including weekends.
  • Must be able and willing to operate vehicles during inclement weather and during special events (e.g., Football Games, Commencement Ceremonies).
Salary

Salary range between $18.00 - $20.00 per hour.
