Role SummaryRivian is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Technical Trades II professional to join our Paint Operations team. This role requires a comprehensive mastery of paint application processes, from foundational tasks to advanced equipment troubleshooting and quality optimization within a high‑volume manufacturing environment. They will exercise considerable judgment and initiative, capable of resolving complex technical issues, implementing corrective actions and recommending process improvements.
This position will report to the Group Leader, Paint Automation on site in Normal, IL.
- Utilize Robview and shop floor editor tools to make robotic path adjustments in response to quality issues.
- Troubleshoot complex, common paint defects and implement effective corrective actions (e.g., fluid changes, equipment cleaning, booth/mix room parameter adjustments).
- Resolve quality and equipment‑related issues, collaborating cross‑functionally.
- Consistently and independently identify, develop, and execute continuous improvement projects.
- Analyze paint quality data (color, film build, etc.) and recommend/implement adjustments for optimization.
- Understand and troubleshoot issues related to Heated Flash conditions and optimize its function.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting of paint booth and robot conditions (e.g., plugged filters, ASU malfunctions, air flow issues).
- Possess a deep understanding of the paint circulation system and how parameters affect application quality; troubleshoot system issues when they occur.
- Manage small equipment‑related projects within the paint area.
- Perform repairs on paint application, automation and delivery system components.
- A technical degree or diploma in a relevant field such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, Robotics, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or equivalent demonstrated experience and technical training.
- Typically requires a minimum of 4 – 6 years of hands‑on experience in an industrial automation, controls engineering, or robotics role, preferably within automotive paint operations, coatings, or a similar complex manufacturing process environment, demonstrating progressive skill development.
- Proven ability as a skilled specialist, completing technical tasks resourcefully and effectively.
- Strong understanding of complex automated electromechanical systems, including robotics, conveyors, fluid delivery, and environmental controls specific to paint applications.
- Proficiency in programming, troubleshooting, and modifying industrial robots (e.g., Fanuc, KUKA, ABB, using vendor‑specific software/languages like Robview, Robot Studio, Karel, KRL, RAPID). Experience with path adjustments and optimization is essential.
- Experience with programming and troubleshooting PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) used in industrial automation (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal/Step 7, Allen‑Bradley Studio 5000/RSLogix 5000). Understanding of ladder logic, structured text, or function block diagrams.
- Solid understanding of industrial control system logic, sequencing, and integration between different automation components.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills applied across a wide range of paint processes and equipment.
- Requires considerable judgment and initiative in resolving complex issues and making recommendations.
- Solid understanding of the implications of technical work and ability to recommend viable solutions.
