Job Description

The Gallogly College of Engineering has seen rapid growth in undergraduate and graduate enrollment. Many engineering programs across the schools have teaching laboratories that use electronics to collect and control experiments. The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in particular, has laboratory courses focused on circuits, sensors, and other topics.

Under the direction of the Dean, the Electronics Lab Coordinator will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled activities related to electronic devices and experiments across schools in engineering. The person will place orders for, prepare, and maintain laboratory materials, supplies, and associated equipment. The new Electronics Lab Coordinator will be assigned duties requiring considerable technical knowledge and ability in electronics.

The Electronics Lab Coordinator is expected to exercise independent judgment in the performance of duties and is responsible for supervising and maintaining laboratory supplies, materials, equipment, and records.

Essential Duties
  • Provide electronics support for equipment and teaching laboratories across GCoE schools.
  • Work with faculty and lab coordinators to track electronic components, instruments, and tools. Also track condition (e.g., working, under maintenance, faulty).
  • Conduct inventories of, order, receive, and stock materials, supplies, and equipment for laboratory use.
  • Group equipment by category: e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, soldering tools, power supplies, etc.
  • Keep track of periodic calibration and maintenance schedules for equipment.
  • Set up reporting and push notifications for maintenance schedules, inventory needs (e.g., consumables running low), upcoming tasks or experiment deadlines, and safety issues or incidents.
  • Demonstrate the safe and effective operation, and use of laboratory tools and equipment.
  • Ensure technicians and students adhere to safety guidelines related to electronics (e.g., electrical shock prevention, grounding, fire safety).
  • Organize tasks for equipment setup, troubleshooting, or maintenance.
  • May calibrate, maintain, and perform repairs on electrical equipment and supplies.
  • Set up process for instructors and teaching assistants to request assistance directly from the technician.
  • Respond to assistance requests with equipment setup or troubleshooting.
  • Generate reports on equipment usage, experiment success/failure, or common issues.
  • Assign work of student assistants.
  • Maintain expenditure records and provide data for budget estimates.
  • Perform other duties as required, related to the primary job duties.
Job Requirements

Required

Education and Experience:

High school diploma, GED, or Trade School Certificate AND 24 months experience in general electronics.

Skills
  • Able to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives.
  • Experience with basic electrical systems, electric power tools, and hand tools.
  • Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints, metrics, or technical manuals.
  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information.
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to engage in repetitive motions.
  • Loading and unloading heavy loads (up to 50 lbs.).
  • Stooping, bending, standing, and climbing often and for prolonged periods.
  • Performing physically demanding labor.

  • Frequent exposure to pressure caused by deadlines and busy periods.
Department Preferences
  • Practical knowledge and application of electronics, mechanics, math, and computers; knowledge of operational characteristics of standard shop and lab tools, laboratory apparatus, equipment, and materials pertaining to assigned laboratory and subject area.
  • Experience in performing verification testing on equipment. Minimum of two years of experience as an engineering technician or a related role.
  • Self-motivation; can work with little supervision, consistently taking the initiative to get things done, and doing things before being asked by others or forced to by events.
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact with faculty, guide students and student workers, and to convey technical concepts.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and cause and effect diagrams.
  • Ability to read and follow technical standards as well as verbal instructions.
  • Ability to set up, modify, service, adjust, and make minor repairs to laboratory apparatus and equipment; ability to prepare instructional equipment for laboratory exercises.
