Definition / Primary FunctionAn sterile processing technician works to prepare, sterilize, install, assemble, or clean all laboratory or healthcare equipment required for surgeries, examinations, and medical procedures. The sterile processing technician ensures equipment, instruments, and supplies can be reused safely to prevent infections.
Position Qualifications (Minimum qualifications are required unless stated otherwise)- Experience: None Required.
- Education and Training: High School Graduate.
- License, Certification & Registration: CRCST/CSPDT/CBSPD – Registered CRCST or CSPDT or CBSPD within two years of hire.
- Other Requirements: CS Tech I, CS Tech II, CS Tech III, CS Tech IV;
High School Graduate;
Completion of Registered Central Service Technician & Certified Endoscope Reprocessor Certifications.
- Education Preferred.
- Proficient in CS Tech competencies.
- Completion of Certified Instrument Specialist Certification.
- Completion of Certified Healthcare Leader Certification.
- Minimum of 6 months as a CS Tech I.
- Minimum of one year as a CS Tech.
- Proficient in Tech II Competencies.
- Proficient in all aspects of Central Sterile Technical areas.
- Duties I:
Surgical Instruments. - Duties II:
Advanced Surgical Instruments. - Duties III:
Subject matter expert for service line or operational specialty; OR/CS liaison, mitigating OR issues. - Duties IV:
Decontamination;
Laparoscopic Specialty;
Collaborate with OR specialist case needs;
Facilitate OR OTS and TOT;
Wrapping / Packaging;
Orthopedic Surgical Core;
Inventory, organize, and maintain backup instruments;
Guide CS staff in triage;
Sterilization;
General Surgical Core;
Collaborate with the OR service line specialist and vendors regarding service specific loaners;
Oversee processing areas for staff compliance and safety;
Emergency Trays;
Sterile Storage and Supplies;
Precept new staff in specialty;
Oversee new staff orientation and provide feedback;
Floor Trays;
Case Carts; GHX training and access;
Troubleshoot equipment;
Procedure Carts;
Other CS processing departments;
Inventory, order, and stock supplies as operational specialist;
Monitor documentation; SPM;
Assist with training new staff;
Anticipate and adjust back orders;
Assist with daily assignments, staff, and call schedule;
Follow FIFO;
Collaborate with service leaders and vendors regarding loaner sets and implants and follow through ensuring sets arrive for case;
Instrument ordering and repair;
Data collection.
- Performs above Duties independently. Can function independently and proficiently in multiple specialties. Works in every area of the department as required. Opportunity for advancement into supervisor & Manager positions. Works proficiently without direct supervision. Float to other CS departments as needed.
- Demonstrates ability to function in high stress situations, manual dexterity, capable of adjusting to changes in procedures, work requirements, scheduling, and personnel.
