CNC Cylindrical Grinding Machinist-Programmer

About The Role

Picture your day beginning at a CNC cylindrical grinder. You review the blueprint, absorb the GD&T callouts, and translate them into efficient G- and M-code. You prep the OD/, load the work holding, and verify your wheel and tooling selections. With the first cycle, you’re already measuring to 0.0001 in. and tweaking offsets to lock in repeatable results. Throughout your shift, you’ll move seamlessly between programming, setup, and operation on OD/ equipment—turning complex metal and carbide parts into flawless components.

What

You’ll Do
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC OD/ using G and M codes directly from engineering drawings with a strong command of GD&T; experience with Fanuc, OSP
5000 Okuma, and Heidenhain controls is preferred.
  • Hold ultra-tight tolerances (down to 0.0001 in.) by dialing in machines and tooling with gauges and hand tools.
  • Measure finished parts for dimensional and geometric conformance using precision instruments, templates, and fixtures.
  • Mount, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and work pieces using hand tools and precision metrology.
  • Start machines, monitor cycle performance, listen for signs of dull tooling or vibration, and make real-time adjustments; replace worn wheels or cutting tools as needed.
  • Transfer programs from servers to CNC modules over the network; insert control instructions and adjust offsets to stabilize processes.
  • Verify proper lubrication and coolant flow; record operational data and maintain accurate production records.
  • Stop machines to change tooling, grinding wheels, setups, or workpiece placement to match machining sequences and quality requirements.
  • Inspect for cosmetic and dimensional defects (e.g., chips, marred surfaces) and sort nonconforming parts by defect type.
  • Review specifications and blueprints to determine operations, sequencing, and final dimensions; perform program edits and fine-tune feeds/speeds.

Additional tasks related to production support may be assigned.

Your Toolkit
  • Core proficiency: GD&T, CNC programming, CNC tooling, G-code, and M-code.
  • Machines you’ll run: CNC Grinder (Okuma, Studer), Cylindrical Grinder, , OD/ equipment.
  • Knowledge base:
Mechanical systems (machine design, use, repair, maintenance); production and processing (materials, quality control, throughput, cost); applied mathematics (trigonometry, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics).
Physical & Work Conditions
  • Stand for extended periods in a machine shop environment.
  • Typical schedule is 40+ hours per week and may include overtime, on-call, evenings, and/or weekends.
