Job Overview

This role is located in the Community Service Learning Center in Lillington, NC, and reports to a licensed dentist. The primary responsibility is to provide advanced dental hygiene care, education, and support within the dental clinic that serves both educational and community needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and revise patient histories and record vital signs.
  • Acquaint patients with preventive oriented practice philosophy.
  • Chart existing restorations on new patients and assess disease presence.
  • Perform thorough oral prophylaxis (cleanings), using ultrasonic devices, scaling instruments, polishing, and flossing.
  • Educate, motivate, and reinforce proper plaque removal techniques and provide nutritional guidance.
  • Apply topical fluorides and occlusal sealants as indicated.
  • Take study models for indicated patients.
  • Explain treatment alternatives to patients.
  • Record specific treatments performed and other necessary chart information.
  • Expose, process, and mount necessary radiographs.
  • Aid in chairside assistance as necessary.
  • Handle instrument sharpening, sterilizations, and maintenance of all equipment.
  • Help reconfirm and appoint patients, escort them to and from operatories, and clean and disinfect operatories between visits.
  • Maintain supplies, manage patient recall system, assist with front‑desk duties, and participate in staff meetings.
Qualifications
  • Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.
  • Preferred: CPR certificate and Radiology certification.
  • Ability to work full‑time (1.0 FTE) with consideration for part‑time (0.5–1.0 FTE) appointments; salary and benefits adjusted accordingly.
  • Eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) and various voluntary supplemental retirement and insurance plans.
  • For transfers from other NC state agencies or internal ECU transfers: previous TSERS enrollment maintains eligibility.

Not eligible for the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS) unless previously enrolled. Associates may elect to participate in ORP if not offered during TSERS enrollment.
