Citizenship and Access Requirements:
Must satisfy all Federal Bureau of Prisons suitability, background, onboarding, training, identification, and institution-access requirements applicable to the position.
Security Requirements:
No classified clearance is specified. Employment requires a favorable BOP suitability and institutional-access determination, including applicable fingerprint, law-enforcement, employment-verification, drug-screening, and background processes.
Number of FTEs: 3.0 FTEs. The requirement calls for three full-time Certified Dental Assistants, each scheduled for 40 hours per week.

Full-Time.
Estimated Total Compensation: $28.05 per hour.
Working Hours:
Normally Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch. The schedule is 40 hours per week and may change based on institutional needs; emergency availability may be required.
Work Arrangement:
On-site at the FCC Butner Health Services Department. Routine remote or telework performance is not authorized for these clinical services.
Period of Performance:
November 1, 2026 through September 30, 2031, if all five performance periods are exercised.
The Certified Dental Assistant will provide full-time chairside, radiographic, sterilization, patient-support, recordkeeping, and dental-clinic services for Adults in Custody at Federal Correctional Complex Butner. The position supports restorative dentistry, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthetics, examinations, emergency care, infection control, and the safe daily operation of the dental clinic.
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS- Must possess specialty training from a licensed dentist or certification from an accredited Dental Assistant school.
- Must have completed training in dental radiology and radiation safety.
- Must maintain current CPR certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Must have at least two years of experience providing Dental Assistant services.
- Must be able to collect, track, and enter data in electronic systems and maintain accurate patient medical records and confidentiality.
- Must satisfy communicable-disease and health-screening requirements, including tuberculosis testing or other evidence requested by the Clinical Director.
- Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a correctional clinical setting are preferred but not required.
- Must successfully complete required drug screening, law-enforcement and background checks, orientation, and institutional-access requirements.
- Provide chairside assistance to the Dental Officer during restorative, oral-surgery, periodontal, prosthetic, and examination procedures.
- Retrieve records, escort and prepare patients, prepare treatment rooms, and support orderly patient scheduling and clinic flow.
- Prepare and pass instruments, materials, medications, and supplies; retract tissue, irrigate the oral cavity, and operate the aspirator.
- Observe patient responses, assist with dismissal, provide authorized follow-up instructions, and support emergency dental treatment.
- Complete accurate electronic and paper dental-treatment records, screening charts, periodontal charts, and other required documentation.
- Place temporary fillings, prepare and manage packs, and place or remove rubber dams as directed and within the authorized scope of practice.
- Clean, sharpen, sterilize, and maintain instruments; inspect equipment daily, perform authorized minor repairs, and report defects promptly.
- Apply prescribed medications and anti-cariogenic agents and assist with dental prostheses and appliances under Dental Officer supervision.
- Take and process standard and digital dental radiographs, correctly position patients and film, minimize radiation exposure, and save images to the medical record.
- Perform radiographic quality assurance and follow all required infection-control procedures, including handling and sterilization of contaminated biological waste.
