Before and After School Academy Counselor
Under the direction of the site supervisor, the before and after school academy counselor will work directly at an assigned site leading children in before and after school settings. This position is responsible for identifying and meeting student needs, providing interactive guidance and leadership to children with a focus on character development, centered on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.
EssentialFunctions
- Coordinate the site in accordance with YMCA guidelines, ensuring all program curriculum and materials are prepared and accessible.
- Build effective, authentic relationships with staff, students, and parents; help them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
- Maintain required records (site checklist, attendance, food service, staff & student forms, etc.).
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete corrective action, discipline, incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Ensure that the site is kept organized and all supplies are put away daily; report damaged equipment.
- Participate in Aquatics Activities during out‑of‑school time (including swimming or deck supervision).
- Work directly with school personnel and/or YMCA staff to build a professional working relationship under the direction of the site supervisor.
- Provide the best customer service to parents and program participants, assist with monthly statistical reports, and be strategically involved in bi‑monthly Parent Advisory Committee meetings.
- Schedule and plan site activities that follow the program curriculum and adhere to HEPA standards.
- High school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to apply proactive team management techniques and employ conflict resolution with team as needed.
- Must be available for out‑of‑school days when school is closed and full‑day care is provided at the branch.
- Reliable transportation and flexibility with hours; occasional before‑school hours and/or other duties may be assigned as needed.
- Capable of working with minimal supervision.
Ability to work in excess of a 20‑hour week; before school: 7:00 am‑9:00 am or after school: 2:00‑6:00 pm Monday‑Friday.
- Walk, stand and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
- Lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
- May require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
- Speak concisely and effectively communicate.
- Respond quickly to critical situations; act swiftly in emergencies.
