Description
The Code Compliance Officer performs responsible code enforcement and administrative work for Code Compliance and Zoning Inspections.
An employee in this class performs inspections and enforcement work to ensure compliance with the Town’s ordinances. Work involves site visits to violating property, meeting with property owners, sending out notices of violations, assessing fines, taking issues to court and hiring contractors to perform work. In addition to compliance enforcement, work also includes handling a variety of administrative duties in the planning department such as compiling data, preparing reports and monitoring the progress of work on specific projects.
Work in this class is performed with a high level of independence and judgment. Work is supervised by the Planning Director and is evaluated through conferences, review of work results obtained, and overall success of the code enforcement program.
- Maintains compliance with Town’s ordinances such as overgrown lots, junk cars, signs and minimum housing.
- Sends out notices of violations and follows up on violations and works proactively with residents to avoid possible code violations; mediates issues where possible.
- Documents all violations and potential violations for future action; hires contractors to cut grass on overgrown lot violations; monitors the progress and quality of contractors; maintains detailed records of each violation.
- Records code infractions and imposes penalties or initiates legal action if required.
- Manages the Town’s minimum housing program.
- Conducts street and sign evaluations and coordinates repairs if necessary.
- Conducts safety training for the department and assists with Cemetery duties.
- Performs zoning setbacks, driveway and sidewalk inspections, issues Zoning Certificate of Occupancy; updates Town of Wendell and Wake County records.
- Performs related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the Town's ordinances and codes.
- Thorough knowledge of the laws governing code enforcement.
- Thorough knowledge of the Town’s geography.
- Skilled in conflict resolution.
- Ability to seek and implement reasonable solutions to code violations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public.
- Ability to enforce codes with firmness and tact.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and studies.
- Ability to maintain an inventory.
- Ability to express ideas effectively in oral and written forms.

Education and Experience
Graduation from high school with considerable experience in local government building inspections, construction, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An associate degree in engineering technology, construction management, or related field, is desirable.
