Primary Purpose of Organization Unit

The Office of Human Resources in the Finance and Administration Division offers customer‑focused HR services, including recruitment, EEO compliance, performance management, records management, and employee relations. The unit supports nearly 900 benefits‑eligible staff and over 300 temporary employees.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Classification and Compensation Manager serves as the university’s subject‑matter expert for SHRA and EHRA classifications, status determinations, and compensation actions. The role advises leadership on position and organizational design in line with established policies and guidelines.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Classification and Compensation Manager holds delegated authority to make classification decisions for SHRA & EHRA positions and status determinations. Key duties include:

  • Advising senior leaders on position management, organizational design, compensation strategies, and market analysis.
  • Supporting daily resolution of complex HR issues.
  • Developing dashboards, data analysis tools, and transactional reports.
  • Maintaining the state’s SHRA career banding program, the UNC System EHRA classification program, and compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Communicating classification and compensation decisions; providing transparent reasoning and addressing concerns.
  • Conducting compensation and labor market research and preparing market reports.
  • Providing guidance on statewide initiatives such as salary range revisions and classification studies.
  • Leading campus efforts to comply with FLSA exemption and policy changes.
Key Responsibilities

Communicate classification and compensation decisions, conduct market research, prepare annual market reports, analyze compensation and labor data, offer guidance on statewide initiatives, and lead campus compliance with FLSA and related policies.

Management Preference
  • Certifications in Compensation and/or Human Resources – CCA, CCP, SCP, PHR, SPHR, SHRM
  • Experience in classification and compensation systems, including benchmarking and compensation administration.
  • Knowledge of UNC System or North Carolina public employment classification and compensation systems preferred.
  • Strong analytical, consultative, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.
  • Experience with HR information systems such as People Admin, Banner HR, or comparable HRIS.
  • Proficiency in designing or delivering employee training sessions.
Lic or Certification required by statute or regulation
