Location: Haw River

The Town of Haw River, North Carolina, centrally located on the I-40/I-85 Corridor between Greensboro and Durham is seeking a progressive and innovative Fire Chief. Serving a resident population of 2,550 within the Town and a resident population of approximately 4,500 in the unincorporated fire district with a total of 14.4 square miles, the Fire Chief leads a career staff of 4 full-time shift firefighters, 6 part-time firefighters and 25 on-call volunteers with an annual operating budget of $735,000.

In addition, the department is currently administering a $6.1 Million state grant. The department is currently rated as an ISO Class 4. The Fire Chief will be heavily involved in the day-to-day operations of the Fire Station and response to all-hazards emergencies within the Town of Haw River and the unincorporated community that is served.

Priorities
:
Some key priorities of the next Fire Chief will include development of a strategic plan for the Fire Department; ensuring a culture of consistency, accountability and engagement; working proactively with other Town departments and external stakeholders to meet community expectations; evaluating current department policies and procedures and creating new ones together with staff for effective response and strengthening all partnerships.

The next Fire Chief will also serve as the town’s lead for construction of a planned new fire station.

Expectations: The ideal candidate would have demonstrated experience in managing municipal budgeting. In addition, the Fire Chief must have a calm demeanor and steady hand and be a natural and effective communicator with every sector the Fire Department engages with, from the employees, the volunteer firefighters, the community, elected officials, and other community partners, demonstrating the ability to relate to individuals of all backgrounds and educational levels.

The Fire Chief will oversee a 24/7, 365-day operation and will require leadership and regular emergency response beyond business hours including nights, weekends and holidays.

Requirements: Candidates must currently possess the following: (or be able to obtain within a negotiated period provided in the letter of offer):

  • Associate’s degree in Fire Protection, Public Administration, or similar.
  • North Carolina Fire Officer 2, Firefighter 2, Chief 101, and Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Class B driver’s license.

Prior experience in a career fire department including supervisory experience at the company officer level or above is preferred.

Compensation: Hiring range for this position is $62,605.41 to $76,864.29, commensurate with experience and is FLSA Exempt. The Town of Haw River participates in NCLGERS and provides a competitive benefits package to all full-time Town employees.
