This is an 11-month temporary position with a maximum of 40 hours per week. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.

The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of our aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining, and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences, and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, and sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 4,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium location is in the Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.

Description

of Work:

Primary duties for this position include coverage responsibilities for the Aquarium’s full-time husbandry staff. The husbandry technician will be responsible for assisting aquarists and a horticulturalist in a variety of tasks revolving around the care and maintenance of the many fish, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, and plants at the Aquarium. The typical schedule for this position is a Tuesday through Saturday work week.

Weekend and holiday work will be a large component of this position.

The position will perform the following essential functions:

  • Public speaking and interacting with visitors.
  • Working in hot, humid, and wet conditions.
  • Climbing ladders, swimming, and bending up and down.
  • Lifting as much as 50 lbs.
  • Possessing a valid driver’s license.
  • A degree in one of the natural sciences such as aquaculture, fisheries management, biology, marine biology, ecology, chemistry or a similar area of study or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred.

Management Prefers
