General Definition of Work

Pender Water & Sewer is seeking a skilled and dependable Centralized Maintenance Technician to support the maintenance and repair of critical water and sewer infrastructure. This position will assist in ensuring the operational efficiency, reliability, and safety of pump stations, booster stations, wells, treatment plants, and elevated storage tanks. The ideal candidate will have technical experience in mechanical, electrical, and control systems and will play a vital role in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and supporting compliance with regulatory standards.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Centralized Maintenance Manager.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer facilities, including pump stations, booster stations, wells, treatment plants, and elevated storage tanks.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Respond to equipment malfunctions and support emergency repair efforts to restore service quickly.
  • Work with the Centralized Maintenance Manager and senior staff to complete scheduled maintenance activities.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles necessary for maintenance tasks.
  • Follow established safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, inspections completed, and materials used.
  • Assist with troubleshooting equipment issues and provide input on repair solutions.
  • Support the setup, installation, and testing of new equipment and upgrades.
  • Monitor equipment performance and report potential issues to supervisors.
  • Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal regulations, including environmental and safety standards.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies used in daily operations.
  • Assist in emergency response situations, including outages or system failures.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance technical knowledge and safety awareness.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow technicians, engineers, and contractors to complete projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements

This job regularly requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. It involves speaking and hearing, using hands to handle tools or equipment, and performing repetitive motions. The work requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. It also requires reaching with hands and arms, pushing, pulling, lifting, and operating vehicles or machinery.

Visual requirements include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The position involves exposure to outdoor weather conditions, wet or humid conditions (non-weather), fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock. Work may require wearing specialized personal protective equipment, including a self-contained breathing apparatus. The environment is generally loud.

Special Requirements
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.
  • Generator maintenance-related certifications are preferred.
  • Preferably, possess NCDOT Flagger certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Preferably, possess First Aid/CPR/AED certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
