Diesel Technician Mechanic
Position:
Permanent Full‑Time Experienced Diesel Technician to support our truck fleet at Ryder in North Charleston, SC.
- SBTIII trained within 180 days (SBT
220) - Complete all OEM online diagnostic scan tool software courses required by location fleet mix (completed within 365 days)
- Complete instructor‑led OEM courses required to support location fleet mix
- Perform vehicle maintenance and repair duties including standard maintenance, preventive maintenance, and complex repairs with minimal support
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical and electronic problems using diagnostic computers/software as applicable
- Perform remote triage with RCRC and customers to determine best solutions for roadside breakdowns
- Perform facility maintenance duties
- Interact with customers/drivers to determine nature of complaints once assigned a task
- Instruct and advise other technicians on maintenance repair procedures and diagnostics
- Coach/mentor other level technicians
- Advise shop management and other technicians on shop repairs
- Utilize key functions of the Shop Management System and electronic documentation available
- Work in accordance with all federal, provincial and corporate compliance guidelines (i.e., safety, DOT, MOT)
- Other support duties as required to support operations, including but not limited to Service Island support
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
- Vocational or technical certification, post‑secondary degree or technical certifications (preferred)
- Basic tools required
- Demonstrated aptitude and applied experience in mechanical repair of automotive gas or diesel engines including routine preventative maintenance (oil changes, brake and tire work)
- Diagnostics and repairs including AC, electrical systems
- Advanced skilled level repairs, such as some major engine repairs, diesel after‑treatment or automotive fuel injection repairs (required)
- Four (4) years or more relevant work experience (preferred)
- Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A (preferred)
- All other certifications required by location (required)
- Ability to perform all T3 tasks
- Demonstrated advanced analytical and repair skills in vehicle maintenance
- Effective interpersonal communication skills
- Basic computer skills: PC, Windows, mouse, etc.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Availability to work shift work/weekends and on‑call duty as required
- Preferred ASE Certification in PM, Brakes, A/C, electrical, electronics or ASE Master Mechanic
- Required to operate shop computers and diagnostic test equipment proficiently
- Must have minimum tool requirement
- Must road test vehicles as necessary
- Demonstrated ability to coach/mentor/influence others
- Must be able to obtain a CDL within 6 months after hire
- Pass a Ryder drug test, DOT physical, Ryder road test, and Ryder background and motor‑vehicle check (including drug and alcohol verification from previous employers for the last 3 years)
- Hourly Pay: $34.00 per hour
- Certification Bonus: $100 for each new ASE certification, up to $700
- Quarterly Bonus: up to $500 every quarter – four times per year
- Sign‑On Bonus: $3,000 at 30 days and $3,000 at 90 days
- Schedule:
Tuesday through Saturday (First Shift Tuesday–Friday 5:00 am–1:00 pm; Saturday 7:00 am–3:30 pm) - Annual merit pay increases every year
- On‑job paid training
