Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) — a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval — award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
- United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved VA school.
- Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Physician residents in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs); PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may work on an intermittent or fee‑basis only.
- PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
- Additional requirement:
Board certification in nephrology (preferred). - Greater than 2 years’ experience as a nephrologist.
- Experience teaching residents/fellows/students.
- Physical ability to perform job‑related duties such as light carrying, reaching, walking, and standing.
- Exposure to blood and body fluids may occur.
- Health examination must be completed prior to assignment and periodically thereafter as required by Occupational Health Clinic policy.

- The incumbent will report to the Chief of Nephrology in the Medicine Service Directorate and provide direct patient care.
- The incumbent will care for a broad range of age groups and conditions related to nephrology.
- FHCC provides inpatient and outpatient nephrology care to military members, their families, Naval recruits, and Veterans via inpatient consultations, ambulatory clinic referrals, and Tele Health services.
- The incumbent will provide services including examinations, consultative services, management of patient conditions, and office‑based treatments.
- As a teaching institution the incumbent will educate and collaborate with health‑professional trainees and hold a clinical instructor position at the academic affiliate.
- Incumbent will actively participate in medical staff meetings, relevant committees, quality assurance programs, and assist the facility in meeting nephrology performance measures.
- Incumbent will perform chart reviews and coordinate care issues with other medical staff members.
