Job DescriptionThe Automation/Controls Engineer will be responsible for developing automation and/or controls technologies for utilities control systems to maintain and improve site assurance of supply, quality and safety performance. In this dynamic role the engineer will ensure the success of utilities generation and distribution utilizing a strong background in engineering, configuration, programming, installation, commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting of process controls, automation, electrical devices and field instrumentation technologies.
Responsibilities- Support a safe working environment by aligning with all pertinent environmental health, safety & maintenance program practices, rules, and regulations.
- Apply cGMP processes with change control, nonconformance, corrective & preventative actions, and commissioning & qualification activities.
- Work with product platforms (preferred):
Rockwell PLC Platform, Emerson Delta
V, ABB DCS, PI Data Historian System. - Provide day‑to‑day operational support 24 x 7 onsite/on‑call as needed.
- Troubleshoot utilities operations and collaborate with Operations, Engineering and Maintenance to enhance uptime and reliability of automation systems.
- Drive continuous improvement with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Manufacturing, Process Engineering and OpEx to improve operational efficiencies.
- Contribute to the Abb Vie Global Operations network by sharing continuous improvement opportunities.
- Apply automation engineering principles in design, specification, construction, startup, commissioning and qualification of process equipment and systems for capital projects.
- Develop and maintain engineering specifications, documents, drawings and SOPs (including administrative SOPs and job aids).
- Communicate requirements to OEMs/System Integrators for PLC, HMI, SCADA and DCS applications.
- Maintain industry standards on quality and regulatory compliance such as 21 CFR Part 11 (Data Integrity, User Security, System Disaster Recovery, Data Backup & Restore).
- Present in simple business language at various partner forums.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- Minimum 2‑4 years of experience developing and maintaining automation/controls software and PLC systems in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with system development & validation, including system specifications (DS, FS, URS), risk‑based validation strategies and validation protocol development and execution.
- Knowledge of 21 CFR Part 11 requirements for automated systems in pharmaceutical or medical device industries.
- Problem‑solving and innovative thinking to develop and implement untested solutions.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills.
- Preferred: technical background in health‑care, medical devices, pharmaceutical, biologics or similar industries.
