Job Description

Purpose:

The Pharmacy Technician III (PT III) serves as a point of contact for healthcare providers and patients for their reimbursement and access needs. The PT III helps patients and healthcare providers navigate reimbursement issues, administer patient support services, and supports the pharmacist(s) in pharmacy practice, including obtaining missing prescription information and managing reimbursement.

Responsibilities
  • Subject‑matter expert in all Pharmacy Operations, responsible for assisting, mentoring, training, and participating in side‑by‑side mentoring with team members on prescription processes and reimbursement issues; completes role‑based training including certifications and competency assessments.
  • Uses pharmacy and reimbursement expertise to liaison between healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients to administer patient support service programs per Abb Vie policy.
  • Accurately assesses each assistance request, determines next steps, and creates a comprehensive action plan to resolve or prevent market access or reimbursement challenges.
  • Manages a caseload of healthcare providers and patients independently, prioritized by urgency.
  • Conducts effective, critical conversations with insurance representatives, healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers, providing education on reimbursement processes specific to patient insurance plans.
  • Maintains accurate records of actions and conversations in the system, follows up on outstanding actions within appropriate timelines, and upholds privacy standards required by law and Abb Vie.
  • Researches, compiles, and maintains education materials on insurance benefit information (appeal and denial processes, payer summary plan descriptions, medical policies, formulary listings, fee schedules, etc.).
  • Initiates and manages patient access contracts, including letters of agreement and contracts with skilled nursing facilities and hospitals.
  • Assists the pharmacist with pharmacy practice in accordance with federal, state, local regulations, HIPAA guidelines, corporate, and departmental policies—involving prescriber outreach processes within pharmacy‑technician authority.
  • Disinfects, cleans, and processes returned medical devices; conducts functional inspection and testing of devices as appropriate.
  • Assists PT I and PT II and additional responsibilities as deemed needed by management.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience in Healthcare Finance, Revenue Cycle, Insurance Claims Processing, and/or Specialty Pharmacy Operations.
  • Must meet applicable Pharmacy Technician licensure and certification requirements no later than the first day of employment.
  • Minimum 3‑5 years of experience in a healthcare provider, PBM, specialty pharmacy, or retail/mail‑order pharmacy setting; strong core insurance (medical and pharmacy benefit) knowledge and customer service skills.
  • Strong understanding of billing and healthcare reimbursement channels (commercial pharmacy, major medical, governmental programs) and best practices across multiple patient access support options.
  • Attention to detail, ability to multi‑task, and to make independent, high‑quality decisions under general supervision.
  • Strong computer skills, including data entry and proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Collaborative, cross‑functional acumen, and effective time management to meet deadlines.
  • Clear written and oral communication skills.
  • Flexible work schedule; ability to work during all business hours to meet business needs.
