$40,000.00/yr - $50,000.00/yr

Position Summary

The Biological Resources Facility (BRF) at RFUMS invites applications for a part-time Veterinarian. The individual will work with the Attending Veterinarian and other veterinary and animal care staff to ensure that all animal care and research at the institution complies with regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, USDA, the University's Assurance with the Public Health Service and OLAW, and all other relevant agencies.

The BRF has been an AAALAC accredited facility since 1985 and aims to maintain full accreditation with AAALAC.

This is a part‑time position, averaging 10–12 hours per week. While not eligible for regular employee benefits, all RFU employees can accrue personal leave at a rate of 1 hour per 40 hours worked per year, and may contribute to supplementary pre‑tax and post‑tax retirement plans.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide veterinary medical support for all animal species housed at the BRF.
  • Keep the Institutional Official (IO) and Attending Veterinarian (AV) informed regarding animal health and welfare issues via verbal and written reports.
  • Share emergency coverage with AV and other veterinary staff.
  • Provide training and supervision of staff regarding technical procedures, husbandry practices, and humane use of animals.
  • Perform facility rounds routinely and assist in medical records reviews.
  • Assist in the development and review of general policies, procedures, and SOPs for the BRF.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of the animal welfare and preventative medicine program for all animal species, including sentinel programs.
  • Provide guidance to investigators regarding handling, immobilization, anesthesia, analgesia, surgery, and euthanasia.
  • Advise investigators in animal protocol development to ensure proper care while on study.
  • Serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • Participate in facility inspections, including those conducted by IACUC, USDA, and AAALAC International, and prepare drafts of requested documents and reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must achieve satisfactory results from a background check.
Required Education & Experience
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent from an AVMA‑accredited college of veterinary medicine.
  • Licensed or licensable to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Illinois.
  • Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a research setting in a laboratory animal veterinarian position, preferably in an AAALAC‑accredited facility.
  • Experience in large and small animal veterinary medicine, surgery, and husbandry.
  • Veterinary medicine and surgical experience with swine highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Large and small animal veterinary medicine, management and husbandry, and infectious disease.
  • Understanding of all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements for laboratory animal care and use and AAALAC standards.
  • Understanding of biomedical research in animal models.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department and research personnel.
