DEFINITION

The Head Start Preschool Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting the teacher in carrying out a comprehensive early childhood program in preschool centers. An employee in this class assists in providing special activities for children with special needs and is responsible for the overall operation of the preschool center when the teacher is absent.

DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)
  • Assists the teacher in establishing and maintaining a healthy and safe learning environment.
  • Assists in organizing space into areas whose functions are understood by children and adults, and which encourages appropriate and independent use of materials.
  • Assists in keeping both the inside and outdoor learning environments free of debris, structural hazards, tools, and dangerous substances.
  • Coordinates volunteer and parent activities in the absence of the teacher.
  • Assists in activity planning on a regular basis.
  • Assists in recording information in individual folders for each child.
  • Observes and writes observations for each child.
  • Assists the teacher in completing assessments of the children, and any other required program assessments and/or reports.
  • Accompanies the teacher on home visits and participates in parent/teacher conferences.
  • Helps in maintaining a positive atmosphere for children, their families, and center staff.
  • Helps to set up activities, snacks, and meals for the children in accordance with the daily schedule.
  • Supports the teacher and participates in group activities.
  • Assists in implementing procedures for handling emergencies.
  • Assists children in a calm, gently, friendly manner if they should become ill, injured, or suddenly frightened.
  • Assists in record-keeping of personal and confidential information for children, families, and staff.
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED and CDA Credentials or a state-awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential, are enrolled in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate degree or, are enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within two years of the time of hire.

  • Ability to deal with children in a patient and understanding manner.
  • Ability to read and write and to follow directions.
  • Ability to communicate with staff, children, and parents.
  • Ability to respect and help others respect individual and cultural differences.
