The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. Provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to an assigned resident under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). Knowledge of and delivery of age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident is required as per the care plan.

The NA is expected to adhere to infection prevention and control policies and use personal protective equipment. Responsibilities also include assisting with basic health‑care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support. The NA assists with transfers, repositioning, and walking using proper techniques and equipment, and performs range‑of‑motion and passive exercises. Tasks include food preparation and dining assistance, creating a positive dining experience, providing meals and appropriate supplements, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

The NA documents resident interactions, resident care outcomes, and communicates changes to the charge nurse. The role includes collecting non‑invasive body fluid specimens, managing housekeeping and laundry services, supporting wellness and recreational programs, and may participate in departmental committees as needed.

• High school graduate or GED preferred (not required).
• Minimum age of 16.
• Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
• Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing or state‑certified CNA obtained within four months of the position. CNA training and certification are required, and the facility provides training.
• Completed yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year. A minimum of 12 hours of continuing education are required annually.
• Maintains all department‑specific required certifications.
• When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
• Dependent on facility and required responsibilities, this role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a valid driver’s license, medical qualification, and compliance with the Sanford Driving Policy.
