Job Summary
The Blasting, Painting & Coating Technician is responsible for preparing, applying, and inspecting protective coatings on surfaces, structures, and equipment used in oil and gas construction projects. This role ensures compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and project specifications to maintain corrosion protection and structural integrity.
Duties & Responsibilities- Perform abrasive blasting, water blasting, or other methods to clean and prepare surfaces for coating.
- Remove rust, scale, old paint, and contaminants to achieve required surface profile.
- Apply primers, paints, and specialized coatings (epoxy, polyurethane, etc.) using spray, brush, or roller techniques.
- Ensure proper mixing and application of coating materials according to manufacturer specifications.
- Measure surface profile, cleanliness, and coating thickness using appropriate tools (e.g., DFT gauges).
- Conduct visual inspections and document results to meet project and client standards.
- Follow all safety protocols, including PPE usage and hazard identification.
- Comply with environmental regulations for handling and disposal of blasting media and coating materials.
- Operate and maintain blasting and painting equipment in good working condition.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards promptly.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment, ensuring that it is functioning and operating properly.
- Ensuring quality products and services are provided to the customer.
- Knowledge of equipment and tools commonly used in the oil gas industry.
- Must be professional and motivated to complete all tasks assigned and possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Must possess the ability to safely operate all vehicles and equipment.
- While performing this job's duties, the employee must be able to effectively communicate with other employees, managers, and all other relevant third parties involved with the jobs performed. This includes (but may not be limited to) typing, speaking, reading, writing, and hearing.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- The ability to work independently and part of a team.
- Minimum 2-3 years in blasting, painting, and coating within oil & gas or heavy industrial projects.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and coating specifications.
- NACE Coating Inspector Level 1 or equivalent;
Safety certifications (OSHA, H2S, etc.). - Knowledge of SSPC/NACE standards for surface preparation and coating application.
The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job (but are not limited to). The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, or crouch for extended periods of time, unassisted.
The incumbent must wear a respirator when required. Manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate industrial machinery are required. This job also requires full range of body motion to include handling and lifting. The incumbent must repeatedly lift and/or move up to 65 (SIXTY-FIVE) pounds unassisted. Visual acuity, hearing, speaking, reading, and writing must be adequate to perform all required tasks in a safe manner.
Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Work is usually done outdoors and sometimes at a client facility or job site and is frequently performed in inclement and/or extreme weather conditions. The incumbent is exposed to moving electricity, mechanical parts, vehicles, equipment, and hazardous materials. This position regularly requires long work hours and frequent weekend work.
