Job SummaryThe Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long term care. They provide resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per the care plan. They are a member of the nursing team and are expected to follow infection prevention and control policies and personal protective equipment use.
Key responsibilities include:
assisting with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing; obtaining and recording vital signs; providing psychosocial support; assisting with mobility such as transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct techniques; performing range-of-motion and passive exercises; preparing and serving meals, and providing water and supplements. The NA also aids nursing staff with procedures, documents resident interactions, and communicates changes in condition to the charge nurse. They collect non-invasive body fluid specimens and assist with housekeeping, laundry, wellness, and recreational programs.
Participation in departmental committees and task forces may be required.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long-term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state-certified CNA within four months of starting the position. CNA training will be provided by the facility.
- Satisfactorily completes yearly department-specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits; 12 hours of continuing education are required annually.
- Maintains all department-specific required certifications.
- When applicable, is certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- May classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a valid driver’s license and medical qualification to perform essential driving functions, per Sanford Driving Policy.
