The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to residents during scheduled shifts in long-term care. The NA provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). Responsibilities include age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident, following infection prevention and control policies, and using personal protective equipment. The NA assists with daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, transferring, repositioning, walking, range‑of‑motion and passive exercises, food preparation and dining, and providing psychosocial support.
The NA also documents resident interactions, communicates changes in condition to the charge nurse, collects non‑invasive specimens, provides housekeeping and laundry services, supports wellness and recreational programs, and may participate in departmental committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred (not required).
- Minimum age of 16; prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of start date by enrolling in a training program or obtaining certification through endorsement. CNA training and certification are provided by the facility.
- Completion of yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintenance of a continuing education record, with a minimum of 12 hours each year.
- When applicable, certification and registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Depending on facility responsibilities, the role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver, requiring a motor‑vehicle report, proof of a valid driver’s license, and medical qualification to perform essential driving functions as per the Sanford Driving Policy.
