This position is for a Travel Nurse Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Medical-Surgical (Med Surg) care for a 13-week contract in Rugby, North Dakota. The role involves working 36 hours per week on night shifts, providing patient care to a variety of medical and post-operative patients, with responsibilities including IV management, patient monitoring, and collaboration with ER and telemedicine providers. Required certifications include BLS, with preferred ACLS and NIH Stroke education, and experience with EPIC system is a plus.

Med Surg | RN - # Beds: 18 but only able to staff 10 max at this time; all private rooms.

- Nurse:
Patient Ratios: 1:6 or less typically on both days and nights; 1:8 rarely on nights (depending on acuity/staffing).

- Required certifications: BLS required; ACLS & NIH Stroke Education preferred.

- Common diagnoses/Types of patients:
Pneumonia, Rehab, UTI, general post op, pain control, general medical, aspiration, fractures, dementia, falls, etc. Rare peds (typically needing IV fluids).

- Experience:

IV experience; knowledge of EPIC system preferred. It is rare, but we prefer RNs to have the ability to assist in ER as back up if EMS is out on a call.

- Are RNs required to titrate drips?:
Yes, for a short period of time, but not common practice.

- Common titratable &/or set rate drips:
None are common, most used is Cardizem. Normally we get these patients transferred out to larger facilities. Would need to know basic knowledge. Our nurses always refresh with the policy and with pharmacy as we don’t administered drips very often. The ER nurse is more familiar with starting them and will assist as needed in the event a drip is ordered.

- Is there a Charge Nurse &/or House Supervisor on each shift?:
Yes. Charge does not typically take an assignment. Charge does cover ER or are an extra nurse on the floor. Charge acts as a house supervisor. They also have an administrator on call.

- Are there nurse aids/patient care techs on this unit?:
Yes, one each 8 hour shift. No blood sugars or IV's. Duties' include:
Vitals, ambulation, ADL's, rounding, etc.

- RT Equipment:
No RT at this facility. They do get some home CPAP on med surge unit. Patient typically sets up. BiPap and Vents in ER for short period of time. RN's do breathing treatment, chest physiotherapy, education, etc. Would bag if needed. EMS and charge would assist if needing to bag patient. NP in house (which is the ER provider) and a telemedicine provider available as needed.

- Are there tele/monitor techs on this unit?:
No monitor techs. RN's must read and interpret their own strips. Phillips brand.

- Shifts & Scheduling:
Our staff self-schedule but contract staff will be given schedules around already made schedules. Depends on the start date. Can be given block scheduling as long as the needs of the unit are met. Schedules are out 6 weeks at a time.

- Weekend Requirement:
Staff do every third weekend. Depends on the contract. Every other weekend typically for contracted staff. Weekends are considered Friday/Saturday/Sunday for nights and Saturday/Sunday for days. Open to requests for more weekends, but dependent on the needs at the time.

- Holiday Requirement:
Rotation ½ on ½ off.

- Is there Call or a Standby requirement?:
No - Floating Requirements:
No - Scrub Color/Dress Code:
Any color or pattern, scrubs not provided.

- Unit/Department specific orientation: 1 full 12 hour shift with a preceptor.
