Title: Long-Term Substitute Special Education Teachers
Location: North Haven Middle School
Reports to: Building Principal and Director of Student Services
Supervises: N/A
Work Year: December 2025 - June 2026
Position DescriptionLong-term substitute position for North Haven Middle School Special Education Teacher. Provide specialized instruction and case management for student(s) enrolled at North Haven High School who receive special education services. Additionally collaborate with student's general education teacher(s) and service providers to support students' Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and modify curriculum.
Education Qualifications and Expectations- Degree in Special Education and State of Connecticut Special Education certification (165)
- Working knowledge of co‑teaching and consultative models
- Collaboration with classroom teachers in a co‑teaching and/or consultative role including lesson development, delivery of differentiated instruction, and analysis of student performance data
- Ability to provide direct academic instruction in a resource room model through specialized instruction
- Experience conducting Functional Behavioral Analysis and writing behavioral support plans, analyzing behavioral data
- Ability to initiate productive communication to address student concerns with administration team members and parents
- Develop a daily/weekly schedule of instructional and non‑instructional activities for each paraprofessional to support students on your caseload with intent to build students' independence
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Planning and Placement Team process and related compliance
- Handle with Care trained (training provided by District in fall)
- Conduct appropriate evaluations and assist other teams in understanding the special education eligibility process for students with or suspected of having a disability, including use of state guidelines
- Demonstrate teacher‑leadership qualities to bring initiative and innovation to the special education department in the above areas
- Handle with Care (or the District will provide training)
