Overview

This position will assist the pharmacist in all aspects of prescription preparation and delivery, including data processing, inventory management, prescription preparation, customer service, and department maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Prescription Processing & Preparation (35%) – Accurately and efficiently locate and enter patient demographic information into pharmacy computer systems; ensure accurate transcription of new medication orders and processing of refill requests; perform necessary mathematical calculations for proper dosage, directions, and quantity; assist in third‑party prescription adjudication; manage prescription cost; accurately pick, prepare, package, and label prescription medications for pharmacist verification; assist in LTC prescription preparation and packaging.
  • Customer Service and Communication (30%) – Assist patients in a timely and courteous manner with register transactions, telephone calls, OTC product location, and queries from nursing or providers; manage triage and follow‑up on inquiries; adhere to HIPAA guidelines; observe all “non‑negotiables” such as the 10/5 rule and AIDET protocol.
  • Department Maintenance (20%) – Maintain a clean work environment; ensure compliance with regulatory record‑keeping; maintain proper stocking of all pharmacy items; assist in opening and closing procedures.
  • Inventory Management (15%) – Assist in maintenance of over‑the‑counter merchandise, stocking, pricing, ordering, facing, and removal of outdated items; rotate stock based on expiration dates; remove expired medications; receive medications from wholesaler; perform daily cycle counts; identify items for reordering and assist in placing orders via wholesaler.
Education

High School Diploma or equivalent. Preferably completed an associate’s degree program or pharmacy technician program with broad training in medical office administration, pharmacy technology, social services, or related fields.

Experience

6 months pharmacy technician experience or healthcare experience required; specialty/retail experience preferred. Successful completion of an academic or military pharmacy technician training program will be considered equivalent to one year of pharmacy technician experience. Excellent customer service and communication skills are required.

Licensure

Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certification, State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection Pharmacy Technician license.

Special Skills

Strong customer service and independent problem‑solving skills; excellent verbal and written communication; ability to prioritize and multitask; competent with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel; strong time‑management and organizational skills; flexibility and eagerness to learn; proactive in meeting the varying needs of our patient population.

Physical Demand

Employee must be flexible with scheduling, working evenings, holidays, and weekends as business needs demand; ability to lift and transport light boxes and totes (up to 20 lbs); ability to remain on feet and move around the pharmacy and hospital for the majority of the shift.
