Overview
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated discipline lead for the outfitting & structural design team within our engineering department at a new construction shipyard. This role is pivotal in ensuring the successful design, integration, and coordination of structural and outfitting systems for various classes of vessels under construction. The ideal candidate will lead a multidisciplinary team of designers, interface with the production team to provide work instruction and overall collaboration, purchasing dept.,
and project management to ensure timely and quality detail design deliverables.
- Team Leadership & Coordination
- Lead and mentor a team of engineering designers within the structural and outfitting discipline.
- Assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure team adherence to project timelines and technical standards.
- Foster collaboration with other design disciplines and departments.
- Technical Oversight
- Oversee the development and review of 2D/3D design deliverables including arrangement drawings, foundations, stairs, ladders, railings, platforms, hull structure, and other related detailed production drawings.
- Ensure compliance with classification society requirements, client specifications, and good shipbuilding practice.
- Approve and validate structural and outfitting designs for feasibility, safety, and functionality.
- Project Management
- Participate in project planning, scheduling, and progress reporting related to the outfitting and structural design scope.
- Liaise with production teams to support build strategies, resolve technical queries, and ensure constructability.
- Manage engineering change requests, discrepancy reports, as-built drawings, and ensure timely and accurate updates to detail design documentation.
- Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Implement and uphold best practices in design processes and quality control.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering tools, methodologies, and workflows.
- Conduct design reviews and root cause analyses for design-related issues.
- Recommend and implement strategies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
- Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced team members.
- Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or sufficient work experience in a similar role within the related discipline and industry.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in ship design, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or lead role preferred.
- Strong knowledge of ship structure and hull outfitting design installations.
- Proficient in industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, Ship Constructor, Navis Works, etc.).
- Familiarity with maritime regulatory and classification society rules (e.g., ABS, USCG, DNV, Lloyd’s Register).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Experience in a new construction shipyard environment.
- Prior involvement in complex vessel programs (e.g., naval, offshore, passenger, or specialized commercial vessels).
- Working knowledge of good shipbuilding practices and industry standards.
