QUALIFICATIONS:
- AA, BA degree or Para certification
- Certification in CPR and First Aid for infant, child, and adult, or willingness to obtain certification
- Previous experience working with children preferred but not required
- Initiative to be a self-starter
- Ability to work well with classroom teachers, support staff, administrators, AEA, and parents of students as part of an educational team
- Ability to be flexible in assignments
- Ability to use good judgment when unexpected problems arise
- Ability to use office equipment
- May require physical activity including standing, walking, bending, lifting (up to 40 lbs), sitting on the floor, and swift movements.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

To assist in meeting the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of students in an individual, small group, and classroom settings under the supervision of the building administrator and classroom teacher. To work with the preschool team in order to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:Any or all of the following duties may apply to a specific para educator position, depending on the needs of the students and the operation of the educational setting.
- Assist in providing a safe and nurturing educational environment for preschool aged students with instruction,classroom management, behavior support, and daily routines to promote the development of learners.
- Assist in providing a positive, healthy environment of appropriate early childhood experiences for each child.
- Assist classroom teachers in preparing materials for instruction.
- Respects confidentiality of student records.
- Supervise students during recess, bus times, and lunch times by monitoring behavior and safety of activities
- Assist with basic student health concerns and general medicine distribution.
- Use positive behavior strategies under the direction of the teacher and/or specialist.
- Conform to expectations within the negotiated agreement for Paraeducators
- Other duties as assigned.
175 contract days
Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy of the Iowa City Community School District.
EVALUATION:Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
