Job Summary

The Lead Medical Technologist is required to perform all duties of the Medical Technologist. This includes performing diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. They will also follow standardized procedures and help prepare samples for testing. The Lead MT functions as the resource person to all other staff and acts as a liaison between management and staff.

The individual will serve as point of contact for any issue in the daily operation of the lab and will assess, resolve, and/or escalate to the laboratory manager as appropriate. The Lead Medical Technologist must work closely with the laboratory manager to help maintain daily operations of the laboratory including staffing, analyzer troubleshooting, paperwork, billing tasks, overtime control, and problem solving.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with the lab manager to oversee all lab staff in all locations to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Assist the lab manager in assigning appropriate staff to each clinic location.
  • Oversee daily billing responsibilities for the lab.
  • Continuously seek ways to improve organizational workflow.
  • Problem‑solve when issues arise, involving the lab manager when appropriate.
  • Communicate closely with the lab manager about employee issues that may need to be addressed.
  • Perform, verify, and report laboratory tests in assigned areas per policy and procedure manuals.
  • Analyze blood cells using microscopic techniques and procedures.
  • Ensure operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, ordering repairs, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock, anticipating needs, placing orders, and verifying receipt.
  • Conserve laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies efficiently.
  • Provide medical technology information by answering questions and requests.
  • Prepare reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, networking, and participating in professional societies.
  • Maintain inter‑ and intradepartmental workflow by fostering cooperation.
  • Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection‑control and hazardous waste policies and protocols.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Adhere to quality control policies and assist in quality assurance. Ensure proper documentation for licensure and accreditation.
  • Perform tasks in an organized, efficient manner while maintaining a clean area and orderly documentation.
  • Possess good working knowledge of the laboratory computer system related to the position.
  • Investigate abnormal or unexpected test results before reporting.
  • Communicate test results and concepts to employees, other personnel, and physicians with clarity and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate procedural performance to new personnel, both in theoretical and technical areas, and assist in technical in‑services.
  • Follow stringent safety guidelines for handling potentially harmful infectious agents and enforce universal precautions.
  • Participate in proficiency testing as assigned.
  • Be responsible for all phases of patient testing: pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical.
Education, Certification, Licensure, and Registration
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science.
  • Completion of a NAACLS‑accredited MLS program or a U.S. Military medical laboratory training program that qualifies for ASCP MLS certification eligibility.
  • Current certification or certification eligibility within 12 months of hire as a Medical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Technologist by ASCP BOC, or as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by AMT, or an equivalent national certifying agency.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • 5 years’ MT experience required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively.
  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.
